I am the superintendent of a school district in South-Central Texas. We have been watching this for years. The pressure is on to bring up those who have failed the state's test, while those who are passing are quietly slipping farther down towards merely "acceptable".

In my district, we have now specifically begun to look at individual student growth - sometimes referred to as "value-added". We are trying to ensure that every student is growing at least a year, every year. That way, your student who was commended in third grade isn't barely passing by tenth grade.

This approach is what really needs to happen if we are going to embrace the philosophy "No Child Left Behind".
