Hilfiger's Take on American Luxury

Trench coats and blazers dominated the spring 2009 collection at Tommy Hilfiger, which has in recent seasons produced a more polished take on Americana-inspired sportswear.
The collection combined comfort with sophistication, with billowing, oversized coats paired with loose-fitting drawstring pants, flowing pajama tops and full skirts. A wide-lapel cotton trench in stone was draped over a floor-sweeping white silk dress emblazoned with classic Hilfiger-style navy stripes. A black cotton blazer covered a voluminous bib shirt and wide-leg trousers.
By contrast, the 80s-inspired men's looks were slim and trim; there were form-fitting, white suit jackets and cotton trousers that grazed the ankle. There were a few shots of color, such as a lovely lemon-yellow silk chiffon sundress with braided straps and an orange cotton crepe sweater dress, but for the most part, Mr. Hilfiger stuck to his signature palette of cream, beige, and navy and white.
