Riding Through Ideas at Southbank

The Southbank complex has realized yet another ingenious way to pull the arts into its orbit. All hail the newly opened theme park exhibit, "Psycho Buildings: Artists Take on Architecture," where rides and toys aren't just entertainment, they are conceptual transports, or "rides" through ideas. On the Hayward's balcony is now a pond from the Austrian collective Geletin where visitors can row small boats. In the "recreation area" are such works as Korean artist Do-Hu Suh's precise 5:1 scale model of his family home crashing into a suburban American house. British sculptor Rachel Whiteread's collection of doll's houses is in situ, and there are fantastical tableaux which some have rightly compared to "The Wizard of Oz." Talk about thinking outside the box.
