The contemporary art season in London is grinding into gear. With more than a month to go until Sotheby's and Christie's hold their evening sales, the press releases are beginning to make their rounds. And — shock — Francis Bacon will be making some very high-profile appearances indeed.
The latest about the constant (and worthy) darling of the market is that Sotheby's will be selling his 1967 "Study for Head of George Dyer." Like other portraits of his loved ones, this is an unsettlingly intimate, if inscrutable depiction in which Dyer's face is slashed with anatomically rebellious jags of paint. It's a nice London piece, as it comes from the period Bacon spent in '60s Soho. It's estimated to go for more than $16 million. And — no doubt — will.
