The cream of British society was out in force yesterday at the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup steeplechase at Newbury Racecourse, one of the year's most important race meets. Not quite as royal as Ascot, which the queen always attends, it was nevertheless the place to be.

In the Hennessy box itself, James Blunt and Rod Stewart mingled with Lady Gabriella Windsor (the Brown-educated daughter of Prince Michael of Kent, cousin of the queen), who presented the cup. In this country, horse races are very much royal affairs.

Elsewhere, tweeded aristocrats snacked on little dishes of roast beef, scallop and black pudding discs, ham hocks and fried leeks with cabbage cream. Hennessy cognac was everywhere in all forms — cherry crush cocktails, with angostura bitters, on its own, in coffee, in chocolate.

The viewing deck was crammed with chattering, hatted smokers, thrilled that the constant rain of the past few days had made way for crystal blue skies. But when the heavens reopened, nobody much minded. The favorite to win, an Irish champion novice named Denman, was as good as his tipsters.
