Sinister Happenings, Coming to America Soonby Zoe Strimpel
The best-selling author of "Labyrinth" and the woman whose name provides no end of confusion, Kate Mosse, launched her new book on Wednesday night in London. Like "Labyrinth," "Sepulchre" takes place in Southern France and echoes with the strange and secret happenings that have taken place through the ages in one place — this time, Rennes-les-Bains, a spa town. There are buried treasure, dead kings, a sinister Church and, in the middle of it all, a set of all-powerful tarot cards. With this in mind, the publisher, Orion, threw a launch party in the crypt of the old church St. Martin's in the Fields in Trafalgar Square — on Halloween. If this all sounds heavy on the occult, it is. But there is something classy about Ms. Mosse, and her fans range from Dan Brown lovers to London's literary elite — even the crème de la crème claim they are not immune to a "really good read." There's also the fact that Ms. Mosse, at 46, has a cut-glass British accent and looks almost as good as her supermodel namesake. Do the Dan Brown comparisons make her mad? "Not at all," she told me. "I like them. Dan Brown sort of paved the way for this kind of book. Without him I'm not sure people would have had such an appreciation for 'Labyrinth,' and, hopefully, this one." Dan Brown was like an amuse-bouche, then? "Well," Ms. Mosse conceded, "that's a very nice way of putting it." Ms. Mosse said she has high hopes for "Sepulchre" in America, where it will be published in March, since the heroine of the book is American. "Sepulchre"
