Mayor Bloomberg could not have asked for a better opportunity to project his mantra of bipartisanship than the image broadcast moments ago on MSNBC of the arrival of Senators Obama and McCain at ground zero for a brief joint appearance commemorating the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The mayor alone greeted each candidate and presided, almost as a referee, over handshakes between the two men before they made the long, slow walk down the ramp at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. Mr. Bloomberg, who has not endorsed either candidate, then had the honor of escorting Cindy McCain down the ramp, walking with arms linked a few steps behind the presidential candidates. (Michelle Obama is apparently not in attendance.)
