Convention organizers, at the behest of Senator McCain, have cancelled the political speeches scheduled for tomorrow as Republicans respond to the increasing likelihood that Hurricane Gustav will wreak havoc on the Gulf Coast.

Mr. McCain spoke via satellite to a press conference in St. Paul earlier this afternoon, saying that he had urged party members to "take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats." The convention will open solely to conduct official business needed to prepare for Mr. McCain's nomination, which must occur this week to qualify for state ballots in November. The White House had confirmed earlier today that President Bush and Vice President Cheney would not fly to St. Paul tomorrow, robbing the convention's first night of its marquee speakers. Party officials say the rest of the convention is up in the air, and decisions will be made based on the conditions in the Gulf. In an interview to be broadcast on the NBC Nightly News tonight, Mr. McCain held open the possibility that he would not attend the convention at all and would instead address the delegates via satellite later this week. Convention organized said they would also begin relief efforts for the affected states, including the creation of a working group and providing transportation to and from the Gulf Coast for delegates and their families.
