McCain to Congratulate Obama in Ad Airing Tonight

Senator McCain's campaign just released a television ad to run tonight around the time that Senator Obama will accept the Democratic presidential nomination. The 30-second spot features Mr. McCain speaking directly to the camera and congratulating Mr. Obama on his historic achievement. "Senator Obama, this is truly a good day for America," Mr. McCain says in the ad, which his campaigns says will air on national cable TV and in key states. "Too often the achievements of our opponents go unnoticed. So I wanted to stop and say, congratulations. How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we'll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done." Mr. McCain was referring to the fact that Mr. Obama, the first African American nominee of a major party in history, accepts the nomination on the 45th anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech.

The ad comes amid swirling speculation that Mr. McCain's choice of a running mate could leak out tonight, distracting from Mr. Obama's speech. The Arizona senator and presumptive Republican nominee is scheduled to officially unveil his choice at a rally tomorrow in Ohio. Regardless of the vice presidential announcement, the ad assures that voters will see and hear from Mr. McCain on Mr. Obama's night, and it will have the effect of making Mr. McCain look gracious as voters hear a speech that is expected to include plenty of criticism of his policies from Mr. Obama. Earlier today, a McCain spokesman, Brian Rogers, said the ad would be "unprecedented."
