Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts is known for a speaking style that matches his last name, and he didn't disappoint this afternoon as he addressed an LGBT caucus luncheon here.
Mr. Frank, who is openly gay, lambasted Senator McCain with backhanded compliments. "John McCain is better from the standpoint of LGBT issues than Rick Santorum," he said to laughs, referring to the socially conservative former Pennsylvania senator who was known for his hostility to the push for gay rights. "John McCain has been less abrasively but equally substantively homophobic," he said. "He has never voted for anything that would advance our legal equality."
He also took a blunt shot at the focus on divisions in the Democratic Party at the convention. "If Ted Kennedy, in the face of this terrible illness, can come and make that speech, then will everyone else stop b----ing about such trivia?" Mr. Frank said. He dismissed with humor the suggestion from conservatives that liberal Democrats wanted to install a "radical homosexual agenda" in Washington. "What's our agenda? We want to get married, join the army, and get a job," he quipped to laughs.
Mr. Frank spoke before Michelle Obama, who drew a loud ovation a day after addressing the full convention. She drew on the same themes yesterday, though she added lines targeted to the LGBT community, touting Mr. Obama's opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act and a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. She did not touch directly the hot-button issue of marriage itself. Mr. Obama supports civil unions but opposes same-sex marriage.
