As a corollary to the previous post, the coming week will be an important one for Governor Jindal of Louisiana, whose words and actions during Hurricane Gustav will be watched closely. Indeed, he will likely get more television face time and more scrutiny and attention as the leader of a Gulf Coast state that he ever would have drawn for a convention speech. The 37-year-old governor took office in January and is considered a rising Republican star. Before the emergence of Sarah Palin, he was the favored choice for vice president of many conservative activists, including Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist. If his response to the hurricane is seen as successful, he will have gained the national exposure and tested experience that could spur a future presidential run, whether in 2012 (if Senator McCain loses), or in 2016 (although Ms. Palin may have something to say about that).
