"Driving Mrs. Hevesi" Makes It to N.H.by Russell Berman
The "Driving Mrs. Hevesi" scandal has made it to New Hampshire, and it is being used to target Mayor Giuliani. A stack of anti-Giuliani flyers were found laying on a camera riser at a rally for Senator McCain in Concord, N.H., yesterday afternoon. The flyers juxtaposed pictures of Mr. Giuliani and the former New York state comptroller, Alan Hevesi, who resigned in 2006 in a plea deal after admitting to using taxpayer funds and state employees to chauffeur his ailing wife around the state. The flyer then references reports that Mr. Giuliani used the police as mayor to drive his then-girlfriend, Judith Nathan, in and out of state. The heading reads: "Hey Rudy will you pardon Alan Hevesi?" The source of the flyer could not be identified, and there was no evidence that it originated with the McCain campaign, which said it had nothing to do with it. The Giuliani campaign said it was unaware of the flyer and did not comment. UPDATE: A Giuliani aide e-mails to point out that the substance behind the story that sparked the controversy over Mr. Giuliani's use of taxpayer funds to drive him and Ms. Nathan was largely debunked in a New York Times story last month. The original article by Politico reported that the mayor's office listed the costs of trips he took with Ms. Nathan to the Hamptons in obscure city agencies, possibly in an effort to hide his affair. After a review of city records, the Times concluded this was unlikely, although they buried the article deep inside the paper, much to the chagrin of Mr. Giuliani and his team. For his part, Mr. Giuliani has consistently maintained that the expenses were handled "in a legitimate way" and that Ms. Nathan received protection from the police because of security concerns.
