A liberal political group's TV ad attacking Senator Clinton as a waffler is up on cable TV in Iowa with a buy about the size of a single check to one of Mrs. Clinton's fund-raising receptions.
A report filed today with the Federal Election Commission shows that the political action committee, Democratic Courage, spent just $2500 to put the ad up last week.
"That's what we bought so far," the president of Democratic Courage, Glenn Hurowitz, told The New York Sun this afternoon. "As we get more funding, we hope to do more."
The ad, which can be seen here, contends that Mrs. Clinton caves in easily when faced with Republican attacks, such as Mayor Giuliani's criticism of a proposal she made to give each child born in America a $5000 personal savings account. Mrs. Clinton's campaign has ridiculed the ad effort, contending that reporters were being tricked into reporting on a nonexistent ad campaign. Now it turns out the buy is not nonexistent, but still inconsequential compared with the millions the campaigns themselves are spending in Iowa.
Democratic Courage reported spending $17,400 to make the ad, or roughly seven times what the group has shelled out for airtime.
