The Democratic presidential candidates' debate scheduled for December 10 in Los Angeles has fallen victim to the possibility that the invitees wouldn't have shown up due to a likely strike.
The Democratic National Committee, which was sponsoring the debate in connection with CBS News, announced the cancellation this evening. A DNC spokeswoman, Karen Finney, cited "the uncertainty created by the ongoing labor dispute between CBS and the Writers Guild of America."
Newswriters at CBS, who are represented by the Guild and have been working without a contract for 2 and 1/2 years, recently authorized union leaders to call a strike. There were also indications that the WGA might kick off the strike on December 10 in order to tarnish a high-profile event for CBS News.
There was a decent chance the debate would have featured an all-but-empty stage given that all of the invited candidates indicated they would not cross picket lines to attend the exchange.
