Senator Clinton's announcement yesterday that she plans to support legislation to block President Bush from taking military action against Iran without prior approval from Congress did not sit well with Mitt Romney.
The former Massachusetts governor, who snubbed a former Iranian president by denying him state police protection during a visit to the Bay State last year, called Mrs. Clinton's stance "fundamentally irresponsible."
The full text of Mr. Romney's statement follows: "Yet again, Senator Clinton has broadcast weakness and divisiveness by tying the hands of our military as they confront an Iranian regime supporting terror and racing toward nuclear weapons capabilities that would enable genocide on an unprecedented scale. As General David Petraeus has testified, Iran is supporting Shia militia extremists and violence in Iraq that is taking the lives of American soldiers. America must stand united against these threats and Senator Clinton's actions are fundamentally irresponsible."
It's worth noting that when Mrs. Clinton announced her support for the Iran-related legislation yesterday she insisted that it would not inhibit the right of American troops in Iraq to respond to attacks from Iranian operatives. "We never take away the right of self defense," she said.
