James Dobson, head of the tax-exempt Focus on the Family, issues a rather explicit political threat to Rudy Giuliani today in the New York Times: "If the major political parties decide to abandon conservative principles, the cohesion of pro-family advocates will be all too apparent in 2008."
Meanwhile, Fred Thompson responded on Fox News last night to Mr. Dobson's recent antics regarding the former Tennessee senator (saying he's not a Christian and attacking him for refusing to support the Federal Marriage Amendment).
Mr. Thompson called Mr. Dobson "A gentleman who has never met me, who has never talked to me, I've never talked to him on the phone." Sean Hannity asked whether Mr. Thompson would like to speak to Mr. Dobson and whether that would help smooth things over. His response: "I have no idea. I don't particularly care to have a conversation with him. If he wants to call up and apologize again, that's ok with me. But I'm not going to dance to anybody's tune."
One thing out of all of this: It's looking increasingly likely that the social-conservative movement will overplay its hand. Messrs. Giuliani and Thompson are the two most likely GOP nominees. And if either of them is the nominee, or eventually the president, Mr. Dobson will have made an enemy and made sure he has exactly zero influence with the next administration. Their only hope is to throw the election to Hillary Clinton. That could mean the next crowd of GOP contenders in 2012 would be afraid of Dobson & Co.; but it could just mean they'll be blamed (like Ralph Nader) for bringing about electoral catastrophe.
