Newt Gingrich had previously said he wouldn't get in the race if Fred Thompson did and made a good showing. I'd call achieving second place (or perhaps even co-frontrunner) status immediately a pretty good showing. But, apparently, Newt Gingrich still feels he has a reason to run.

He's told the Washington Times that if he can get pledges for $30 million in three weeks — that is, take in $10 million a week through mid-October — he'll make a run of it. Why? It's hard to say.

True, social conservatives have been reluctant to rally around Mr. Thompson, but that doesn't mean they'll flock to Newt. Mr. Gingrich may take the right positions to win their votes, but his personal life looks more like Rudy Giuliani's than Mitt Romney's. Given that, I have a hard time believing that Mr. Gingrich could become the social-conservative alternative. And if he's not that, what space is he going for? Competent manager (taken by Mr. Giuliani and/or Mr. Romney, and Mr. Gingrich's time as Speaker had its problem on this front)? Old war horse (OK, he could take this one from John McCain, who has been chronically disloyal to the GOP, but it's hardly a winning position)?

Mr. Gingrich would be an exciting addition to the race in many ways, but I just don't see any path to the nomination. In the meantime, he can only help Mr. Giuliani by splitting the anti-Rudy vote.
