The Times reports that the Republican debate on Univision — for which only John McCain had signed up for — has been postponed indefinitely:
Univisión, the Spanish-language television network, is postponing its G.O.P. debate. Only Senator John McCain (coincidentally, the only Republican candidate who favored the comprehensive immigration legislation that failed this year) was able to commit to the original date, Sept. 16.
"The Republican presidential forum is being rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts," said Brooke Morganstein, a spokeswoman for the network. "We're working with the candidates. We're in communication with all of the candidates" about an alternate date.
But a spokeswoman for the debate site, the University of Miami, who spoke to The Miami Herald, had a slightly different take:
"'We're thinking that everyone wants to see how the Democratic one goes before they commit," Bárbara Gutiérrez told The Herald.
Mr. McCain, of course, was the only Republican in the race to support the senate immigration-reform bill. With the Univision debate off, it's unclear when he will next return to Florida — likely the key primary of 2008, yet one which the senator has abandoned for lack of resources.
