In the interest of being your clearinghouse for all things Fred, here are two more items, for now:
1) Fred Thompson is leaving "Law & Order" (now we know he's serious.) Rumors are that Sam Waterston will be bumped up to DA for the show's 18th season. Does this mean that if Mr. Thompson is elected president, Mr. Waterston becomes second-in-line under the Constitution?
2) CQPolitics.com provides a breakdown of Mr. Thompson's voting record, including a PDF of how Mr. Thompson voted on 102 CQ-defined "key votes."
There's really nothing very sexy in the vote breakdown. Mr. Thompson has voted very similarly to John McCain, Sam Brownback, and Chuck Hagel — two senators running for president and one considering making a run. Mr. Brownback is considered more conservative than Mr. Thompson by conservative rating groups; Mr. Thompson outscores Messrs. McCain and Hagel (bug surprise).
One non-conservative vote you already knew about: Mr. Thompson voted for McCain-Feingold, which restricts political donations and political advertising (aka, political speech).
Mr. Thompson also voted repeatedly over the years against limiting damages in civil suits. Most conservatives support tort reform; Mr. Thompson argues that the matter should be left up to the states, for the most part.
