Fred Thompson is running. Politico's Mike Allen now adds that there is a soft plan for a July 4 announcement of an official campaign. It's unclear what this means precisely for the timetable he has set out. June 4 is the most likely day he will launch his "testing the waters" committee. Will he even bother with the "exploratory" phase between June 4 and July 4? Also, will he play in Iowa? The straw poll is August 11, and he starts way behind the pack — despite strong showings elsewhere, Iowa is a personal attention state and he barely breaks double digits in one poll.
