Following up on my post Friday, here's another indication that the CW has finally caught up with the facts. The Hotline has updated its presidential race rankings to put the former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, at the head of the Republican pack.

For a sense of just how much this pains a good portion of the media, take a look at this quote from the Hotline, explaining why they had to lower John McCain's ranking: "Early polls don't mean too much, but it's hard for us to call McCain the front-runner any longer when 80 percent of the voting base routinely chooses someone else. Real skepticism is growing among the media too."

Of course, why the media's bias is to call someone the frontrunner despite they're not actually being the frontrunner is its own question. But let's look at the rest of the Hotline's logic in upgrading the former mayor...

The Hotline breaks down the Giuliani skeptics into three camps: the McCain camp, the Huckabee camp and the Arlington camp. The McCainiacs think Rudy's personal life and business dealings will disqualify him; the Huckabees think Rudy is simply too liberal; and the Arlingtoners think Rudy might win, but that this would be a disaster for social conservatives.

However, the Hotline concludes:

If the election were held tomorrow, Giuliani would win. He doesn't have McCain's organizational strength, money, or endorsements, but he has a solid and growing lead in national polls. And so far, he's repelled some fairly devastating attacks (like the notion that he does not speak to his son).
Given McCain's apparent worries about his first-quarter fundraising, however, one might start wondering about his vaunted campaign machine.

Regardless, while I continue to think Mr. Giuliani is a vulnerable frontrunner — one who needs to get more serious about on-the-ground organizing, work on mitigating potential embarrassments stemming from his personal life, and work on mollifying social conservatives — he has long been the frontrunner, nonetheless.
