This morning, the Giuliani campaign sends on this: "The Rudy Giuliani Presidential Exploratory Committee today announced that Steve Forbes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes magazine, has endorsed Rudy Giuliani for President of the United States. Mr. Forbes will serve as a National Campaign Co-Chair and Senior Policy Advisor."

I'd take this as a fairly significant endorsement for two reasons...

First, of course, is that Steve Forbes is a figure quite popular with the economic conservative wing of the Republican Party. He's famous, as conservatives all know, for championing a flat tax in his 1996 presidential campaign. (Is this the direction Rudy's moving in?)

Second, Mr. Forbes, when he ran again in 2000, underwent a transformation to try to make himself into the "family values" candidate in that race. Much less economics, much more home economics. (Work with me here, folks.)

So, this is an endorsement from a prominent conservative with a foot in both worlds, when it comes to economic versus social conservatives.

UPDATE: Do you know who hated Steve Forbes's flat tax and took out an ad attacking it back in 1996? Yes, Mitt Romney.

UPDATE 2: Also, you know who else hated it?
