While visiting San Francisco on a fund-raising swing tomorrow, Senator Clinton is planning to make amends for a gaffe that caused a furor last month in the Asian-American community. At a February 23 fund-raiser in the same city, three reporters for Chinese-language newspapers were denied entry. The Clinton campaign had announced that the event would be pooled, but the real trouble arose when a campaign aide allegedly told at least one of the journalists to take her complaints about being excluded to a spokesman that handles "foreign press."

The journalists involved work for newspapers written and published in America, primarily by American citizens of Chinese descent, so they took umbrage at being lumped in with foreigners.

The Clinton campaign quickly apologized for the "foreign press" characterization and now is doing some penance by arranging an interview session early Sunday between dozens of Asian-oriented press outlets and Mrs. Clinton.

The original snub was front-page news in the nationally-circulated Chinese-language newspapers, but took days to even be mentioned in English-language publications. It pushed buttons with many Asian Americans who chafe at perceptions that they are not true Americans or may harbor dual loyalties, even when they have lived here for generations.

The Sun learned of the Sunday sit-down from some of those invited to attend. A Clinton campaign spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on the confab.
